The 404 km long Chambal Expressway, passing through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, is included in phase-1 of Bharatmala Pariyojana.
“Following projects have been included in Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-1, Chambal Expressway (404 Km), Greenfield connectivity of NH-26 and NH-75 outside Jhansi (16.8 Km) and Dwarka Circle to Nashik Road section of NH-60 (5.9 Km),” the Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said.
The proposed Rs 8,250 crore Chambal Expressway could be a game-changer for the poor and tribals living in far-flung areas of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
This expressway provides an alternate route from Kanpur to Kota through Madhya Pradesh, and then it joins the Delhi-Mumbai corridor.
The proposed Chambal Expressway will provide a direct link between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It will run parallel to the Chambal river via Shivpuri, Bhind, Morena, to Kota (Rajasthan).
Also, this expressway can be seen as a link route that directly connects two significant expressways of Northern India, namely the Delhi-Mumbai expressway and the Agra-Lucknow expressway.
In August 2020, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Chambal Expressway would be named Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Chambal Progressway.
