77.7 Per Cent People In India Are Literate: Here's A State And Gender Wise Breakup Of Literacy In India

A report based on the National Statistical Office (NSO) survey from July 2017 to June 2018 has revealed that 77.7 per cent people in the country are literate.
As per the report [PDF] titled, "Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey - from July 2017 to June 2018", Kerala has the highest literacy in the country at 96.2 per cent followed by Delhi wherein 88.7 per cent of the residents are literate.
Andhra Pradesh is the least literate state in the country with a literacy rate of 66.4 per cent.
States like Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal have literacy of over 80 per cent.
Here is a table of the state-wise breakup of total literacy in the country.
As per the data, the total rural literacy in the country stands at 73.5 per cent, 14.2 percentage points lower than the urban literacy which has been surveyed to be 87.7 per cent.
Coming to the gender based classification, 84.7 per cent males in the country are literate and the figure stands at 70.3 per cent for females.
This survey was carried out for individuals aged above 7 years.
