The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (9 July) that the Centre's crop insurance schemes - Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and Restructured Water-based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) - had benefited as many as 80 lakh farmers across the nation in the 2018 Kharif season, reports The Hindu.

Tomar informed the parliament that Rs 9,046 crore worth of claims had been paid to 80 lakh farmers under the two crop insurance schemes for the 2018 Kharif season. He also added that the data was provisional, as some claims from Kharif 2018 were still to be reported.

It should be noted that the PMFBY, which was launched in the year 2016, the farmers get full claim for their crop damages for very nominal premium. The scheme is being implemented in most of the states.

For the processing of any claim under PMFBY, the Union Government uses the yield data submitted by the concerned State government. Meanwhile, for the claims under RWBCIS, the government uses the weather data from weather stations designated in the notification by the state governments.
