The stinging defeat of AAP’s candidate in Delhi’s Rajouri Garden bypoll is ominous with the impending municipal polls on 23 April.

Coming third among the major parties in the poll for Delhi’s Rajouri Garden assembly constituency, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate in the running for the seat has lost his deposit, reported the Times of India.

While AAP struggled, securing 10,243 votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the assembly seat comfortably with 40,602 votes, and the Congress stood second with 25,950 votes.

Akali Dal candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa fought the bypoll on the BJP ticket, securing over 50 per cent of the total votes polled. This will come as a boost for the saffron party ahead of the April 23 municipal election.

After the results came in, the BJP took a jibe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying that if he wanted to be Chief Minister by night and prime minister by morning, then somewhere in the middle you to tend to lose your deposit.

The Times of India report quoted a BJP worker, Tarlochan Singh, as saying, “I am distributing ladoos because people who made a mistake by electing AAP in 2015 have undone their mistake.”

Jarnail Singh of AAP had quit the Rajouri Garden constituency, which he had won in 2015, in order to fight against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supremo Parkash Singh Badal from the Lambi seat in the recently held Punjab assembly election.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said AAP’s poor performance in Rajouri Garden was an indication that the voters were still annoyed with Jarnail Singh for quitting this assembly seat.
