Swiss Multinational Corporation ABB has made plans to set up facilities to manufacture electric-vehicle chargers in India as they are a vital element of the infrastructure ecosystem which enhances the capabilities of the country’s electric mobility sector.

Frank Muehlon, head of the Swiss engineering company’s Global Business for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, said that In order to fulfil the requirements in a market like India with 1.2 billion people, we would have to do it locally, so we have a clear plan moving forward on putting local charger production in India, either at the end of this or early next year.

Muehlon could not divulge the information as to how much investment would be required, but he said that they were funding it. The company wants the government to follow their lead and bet on the Indian market while translating the announcements made by them on the EV industry into action.

“E-mobility depends on how speedily OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) bring in the cars. The other thing is grid enforcement (to ensure power supply to charging stations). For chargers, you need to put right grid behind, and people need to put the charger on the ground to operate them; so, again you need entrepreneurs who start doing that. Overall, I have no doubt that this will happen,” he said, as reported by ET.

As the cost of the lithium-ion battery falls at an alarming rate, the price of vehicles running on fossil fuels and on the battery-powered electric motor will become the same for midsize cars roughly by 2021-2022 as predicted by Muehlon.
