For the first time since 2016, the number two telecom player in the country Bharti AirTel managed to beat Reliance's Jio in new monthly mobile subscriber additions during the month of September 2020.
While Bharti AirTel managed to bring in 37.7 lakh new customers in September 2020 Reliance Jio only managed to add 14.6 lakh new customers, according to TRAI data cited by CNBC TV18.
Reliance Jio had managed to stay in the lead on this metric (new additions in a month) ever since its launch in 2016 and has seen itself demoted to number two slot for the first time.
Further data cited by CNBC TV18 shows that Jio continues to be the market leader with an overall subscriber base of approximately 40 crore customers while Bharti Airtel serves 32 crore subscribers. Other players include Vodafone with 29.5 crore subscribers, BSNL at 11 crore and MTNL at 33 lakh users.
