The Maharashtra government has given a conditional approval to the monorail between Wadala and Jacob Circle, reverting the initial rejection five months ago, Metro Rail News has reported. However, the urban development department has asked certain safety measures to be complied with.

The second phase of the monorail project is expected to be completed by 2019. However, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) authorities are yet to obtain additional rakes to implement the expansion which may cause delay in the project. In April this year, the authority had decided to purchase rakes directly instead of getting them through contractors to shorten the project timeline.

Scomi Engineering was supposed to deliver four-coach trains to help improve frequency by mid-2019. Since they might not be able to do so, there will be a delay. Out of the existing 10 four-coach monorails, only four are operational so far due to maintenance issues.

“We had submitted another report to the state government. They have granted a conditional nod for commissioning the second phase of the monorail. All permissions have been sorted from the state’s side,” a senior official told Metro Rail News.
