Two days after 20-year-old Trilochan Mahato was found hanging from a tree in Purulia’s Balarampur development block, another Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activist was hanged (watch the clip) from a high-tension electrical transmission tower in Dabha village in the same area on Friday night. The body of 30-year-old Dulal Kumar was discovered by villagers this morning. Kumar, who was actively associated with the BJP and had received death threats from local Trinamool Congress leaders and activists, had gone missing from his home on Friday evening. The body has been sent for post mortem.

Significantly, Trinamool Congress MP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee had declared at a public rally earlier this week that he would rid Purulia of political opposition. Banerjee said this in the context of the BJP’s electoral successes in the recent panchayat polls. The polls saw widespread violence unleashed by the Trinamool Congress, which has been accused of large scale rigging as well. Workers, activists and supporters of the BJP, which has emerged as the primary opposition party, are being targeted by the Trinamool all over the state.
