In a recent move expanding the campaign against Chinese tech giant Huawei, United States (US) has blacklisted more than 20 per cent of its global research and development centres, reports Nikkei Asian Review.
In a new blacklist published by US on Monday, at least 11 of Huawei’s key research facilities, including those in China, UK and Italy were included. Previously, only one research centre in Belgium had been blacklisted.
The research facilities were mentioned in the list of 46 new affiliated with which US companies cannot trade without Washington’s permission. However, the US Commerce Department extended the 90-day-deadline for Huawei to continue buying certain product and services from American companies.
Huawei is already dealing with the first blacklist imposed by the US in May, and more than 100 of its affiliates are now barred from trading with US companies. The blacklisting could slow the research and development capability of the company as it loses access to US technologies.
President Donald Trump on Sunday called the company a “national security threat”, marking a U-turn from his statement at June G20 meet when he assured that he would allow American companies to ship products to Huawei.
The Huawei criticised the US move saying it was politically motivated. Washinton’s attempt to “suppress Huawei’s business won’t help the United States achieve technological leadership,” the company said.
