In what could be considered as a grave security breach, a policeman on Thursday (18 April) posted near the place where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to give a speech in Thiruvananthapuram accidentally fired a shot, reports The New Indian Express (TNIE).

The shot was fired before the Prime Minister landed at the Central Stadium to address the election rally. The policeman, attached with the Kollam AR Camp, was immediately taken off duty and sent back.

Authorities who were taken aback by the incident, have called for a report on the same. The rally was however allowed to continue and in his speech, PM Modi launched a scathing attack against the Opposition.

Appeasement Politics

"Congress' Naamdaar says he is contesting from Wayanad because he wanted to send a message to South. Couldn't you contest from Trivandrum to give the message? It's the capital. It's not a message to South but a message of appeasement politics," said PM Modi.

Thiruvananthapuram and Pathnamthitta, where the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple is located, is amidst a fierce triangular contest between the ruling CPI(M), Congress-led UDF and a BJP-NDA candidate.
