AICTE To Invite Retired IIT, NIT Professors To Mentor Colleges For Improving Technical Education Quality

India’s apex higher education body AICTE has launched a new programme under which retired faculty of IITs and NITs will be invited to mentor struggling institutes to improve their learning outcomes, reports Hindustan Times (HT).
“These mentors would be in a better position to help institutes in improving the quality of education and student experience, which will automatically make the process of acquiring accreditation easier for technical institutes,” said Anil Sahasrabuddhe, director of All India Council Technical Education (AICTE).
Since December 2017, the body has been in a mission mode to improve the quality of technical education in the country. It has sought to introduce better systems and processes across institutes to enhance their pedagogy.
As part of this mission, it has proposed well-performing colleges tutor neighbouring institutes that were struggling to improve their education benchmarks.

AICTE has also introduced a 360-degree feedback scoring system which will be used to assess a teacher and consequently play a part in his/her promotion.
Incidentally, this is the first time students’ feedback would be considered during teachers’ assessment with regards to promotions. AICTE adviser Rajive Kumar states that this process gives its due to the students who are the primary stakeholders in the education system.
