According to the new policy finalised by AICTE, engineering students will have to undertake an internship for a stipulated period mandatorily, The New Indian Express has reported.
All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is India’s apex regulator for technical education. It works under the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development (HRD).
The body has also made it mandatory for students to earn ‘activity points’ over and above their regular grades. Engineering students are expected to earn 100 activity points while diploma students are expected to earn 75 activity points.
While those students enrolled in BE/B Tech courses will have to complete around 600-700 hours of internship, those pursuing Diploma courses are expected to intern for 450-500 hours. Such internships will earn BE/B. Tech students about 14-20 credits and 10-14 credits in the case of Diploma courses. 40-45 hours of internship at a company will earn one credit.
To help students find internship prospects, the regulator has also created a separate website. This move to mandate compulsory internship is in line to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in classrooms and practical experience of working on real-life projects.
