Rahul Gandhi
An independent candidate contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency named Dhruv Lal has alleged that the Congress President Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship and has disparity in his affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Press Trust of India has reported.
The candidate’s lawyer Ravi Prakash has alleged that during a company’s registration in the UK, Rahul Gandhi declared himself a British citizen.
The company named “Backops Limited” was registered in 2004 and showed Rahul Gandhi as its director, shareholder and company secretary.
Subsequently the Congress president’s counsel has sought time to reply to the allegation leading the BJP to allege that there is indeed some substance to the matter by calling the delay “stunning”.
"These are serious allegations. Is Rahul Gandhi an Indian citizen or not? Did he ever become a British citizen? He should come out with the real story", added BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao.
Subsequently, Amethi’s returning officer Ram Manohar Misra has postponed Rahul Gandhi’s document verification to 22 April thereby providing time to the Congress president’s counsel in this matter to reply to the allegations.
If the charges against Rahul Gandhi are proven, he is liable to be debarred from contesting the Lok Sabha polls owing to being a non-citizen of India.
