Amidst Efforts To Restore Its Hindu Identity, Month Long Festival Showcasing Indic Culture Begins In Nepal

The ‘Festival of India in Nepal’, a month-long celebration of Indian culture in Nepal kicked off yesterday (19 February) in Kathmandu with the performance of a musical drama portraying the life of Gautam Buddha, reports ANI.
The maiden event was held at the Indian Embassy in the Nepalese capital, organised by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre with the support of the Indian culture ministry.
The chief guest at the function was Nepal’s Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari. The first performance was conducted by the Sumit Roy Group, who depicted Buddha’s life through a musical drama.
Over the next thirty days, the festival will also witness other art forms such as Mridangam instrumental performance, Punjabi folk dance, theatre art, Kathakali dance, etc.
Moreover, there will be an exhibition and an oratory competition based on Mahatma Gandhi. Also, there will be a seminar conducted on the Sanskrit language.
“The festival of India in Nepal is aimed at consolidating and strengthening our existing age-old relations, reinforcing sensibilities, affinities and shared cultural bonds between the people of our two countries. The festival will further contribute towards sustaining and enhancing mutual understanding between India and Nepal,” the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said.
