Animal Welfare Board Says It Has No Intention To Challenge The New Jallikattu Law

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has made it clear that it has no intention to challenge the new jallikattu law, and has ordered the immediate withdrawal of any such petition filed in the Supreme Court on its behalf.
The board’s clarification was in response to news reports saying AWBI has moved the Supreme Court challenging the new jallikattu law.
The clarification in the form of a letter dated 25 January 2017 is addressed to Anjali Sharma, advocate and member of the AWBI. The letter also said that the court cases related to the Animal Welfare Board of India may be filed before the Supreme Court or any other court only after the approval of the board.
Earlier, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it will file an application seeking withdrawal of its 2016 notification allowing the bull-taming sport. The Centre’s move has rendered the case infructuous, a verdict on which was supposed to be handed down by the court this week.
