A day after Portuguese manager José Mourinho left the club, Manchester United - the biggest English football club, has appointed former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The English club confirmed the appointment of the former Norwegian player through an official statement that they released on their website.

“Solskjær will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna”, they said in the statement.

Manchester United are currently in the midst of their worst start to a season since 1990-91 under Sir Alex Ferguson when they finished 24 points behind champions Arsenal.

Solskjær, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United, is famously remembered among the club’s faithful for his winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final and thus capturing the treble.

“Manchester United is in my heart, and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjær who previously has managed the United reserve team, Molde, Cardiff City and the Clausenengen U19 team.

Solskjaer will be United’s fifth manager, since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson retired after a long, glorious career. The club and its fans will be hoping that the former player will be able to fix the leaky defence and use his experience in front of goal to inspire the lacklustre but talented forward line.
