In a major setback for the Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party (SP), another Member of Parliament (MP) from its fold, Surendra Singh Nagar has tendered his resignation in the Rajya Sabha on Friday (2 August), reports The Hindu.

The development comes after Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister (PM) Chandrashekhar had quit the SP and resigned from Rajya Sabha on 15 July to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Nagar's resignation from the Rajya Sabha and the party has reduced the bench strength of SP in Rajya Sabha to 11. Meanwhile, Nagar like Shekhar is likely to join the BJP soon. It should be noted that Nagar had joined the SP only in 2014, before which he has also been a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

With the resignation tendered by Nagar, the effective strength of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha has been reduced to 103 on paper. Seven members from the opposition camp have joined the BJP since the culmination of Lok Sabha elections.
