Apple Contract Manufacturer Wistron Set To Invest Rs 1,150 Crore In Karnataka

Apple’s contract manufacturer, Taiwan-based Wistron will be investing Rs 1,150 crore in Karnataka in the first phase of its operations, The Hindu has reported . Principal Secretary, Information Technology to the State government, Gaurav Gupta told The Hindu that the company will progressively manufacture components for the iPhones in Phase II or Phase III in the state.

Apple has asked for import duty concessions and incentives from the state government even though its contract manufacturer is involved in the proposal. Some of the concessions demanded by the company can be given only by the Centre according to the state government bureaucrat. The central government is currently not ready to reduce import duties as it will make domestic manufacturing less competitive.

Wistron’s rival Foxconn has also announced plans to invest $5 billion in Maharashtra according to the report.

India is attracting huge investments in the area of mobile phone manufacturing in the past four years. The Modi government has claimed that number of mobile manufacturing factories had increased from 2 to 120 since it came to power. Recently, the South Korean PM was in India to inaugurate the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturing unit setup by Samsung in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
