Arakere Lake In Bengaluru: BWSSB Says It Will Prevent Further Sewage Inflow Into Water Body Within A Month’s Time

Arakere Lake, situated on Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road, has seen some serious problems in the past such as sewage being let into the lake completely polluting the water body. However, in a positive development, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has said that it will put in all efforts to stop the inflow of sewage into the lake within the next one month.
BWSSB, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Arakere ward corporator, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and United Bengaluru took out a survey of the lake and duly noted the situation on the ground and later on set the deadline.
Bangalore Mirror quoted one of the officials of BWSSB as saying, “In a matter of 30 days, I will ensure that all the inlets are closed and no sewage is allowed inside the lake. We have identified three inlets, which will be routed to the main channel. As of now, we are facing a problem in the line that runs across Hosur Road. Once that is channelised, all these inlets can go there.”
All the establishments have collectively failed to maintain and protect the lake so far. The corporator, Bhagyalakshmi Murali, said that she will personally adopt the lake if no solution is found to this issue. A sum of Rs. 7 crore has been sanctioned for the development of the lake, but BDA cannot use it because of a pending case in court and hence, will need the approval of the Tahsildar to begin any work.
