In yet another controversial statement coming from a Kashmiri politician before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) head Mehbooba Mufti has said that the Indian Army will become an ‘occupational force’ in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) if Article 370 is revoked, reports News 18.
Continuing with the belligerent rhetoric, she added that BJP national president would not be permitted to set foot in the state if its special status is withdrawn. Mufti also said that every single Kashmiri would fight to preserve Article 35A.
Omar Abdullah, leader of the National Conference, which is the chief opponent of the PDP in the Kashmir Valley, was also recently in the news for making contentious remarks about bringing back the position of a ‘prime minister’ for Kashmir.
However, Mufti’s remarks can be seen as unusually hostile, even coming from a politician from the valley.
Article 370 is a provision of the Indian Constitution which gives autonomous status to the Indian Constitution. A long-standing demanding from a number of quarters has been the abolition of the article in order to fully integrate the state with India, an objective which Kashmiri political leaders have largely been opposed to.
