On day one of the Asian Games, shooting brought the first medal for India as the mixed team of Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar bagged a bronze in the 10 meter Air Rifle event, the Times of India has reported.

In another development on the first day, India defeated Bangladesh 50-21 in the first round of the Men's Kabaddi event. In Wrestling, Sushil Kumar and Bajrang Punia lost in the first round. In Badminton, India defeated Maldives 3-0 in the Men's Team Round of 16 to reach quarterfinals. India lost against Chinese Taipei in Women's Basketball. In Women’s Kabaddi, India defeated Japan 42-12.

Women's Hockey team will play the hosts — Indonesia — in the evening.

The Asian Games officially started on Saturday with a grand opening ceremony in which Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra led India’s contingent.

Represented by 804 athletes and officials, the Indian contingent is expected to perform better than the previous Asiad in Incheon, South Korea, where they finished eighth with 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze medals.
