The Indian contingent at the ongoing Asian Games suffered a heartbreak on Thursday (30 August) after the men’s hockey team suffered an upset at the hands of Malaysia in the Semi Final.
The Indian team was leading 2-1 until the final moments of the game when Malaysia equalised to force a penalty shootout. Scores were level at the end of five strokes but Malaysia eventually prevailed.
This loss also meant that India now has to go through qualification for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
While the Indian fans were still grappling with the results, the men’s 1500 metre final commenced. The event featured both Manjit Singh and Jinson Johnson who won the gold and silver respectively at the men’s 800-metre event.
For the most part of the event, Johnson was at the second and third position. But he dramatically picked up the pace in the final stretch of the race to finish with an excellent time of 3.44.72, more than a second ahead of the silver medallist.
India currently stands eighth in the medals tally with 12 golds, 20 silvers and 25 bronze medals.
