Arpinder Singh gave India its tenth gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang on Wednesday (29 August) after winning the Men’s triple jump event.
Singh won the gold medal after jumping a distance of 16.77 metres. The silver medal was bagged by Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Kurbanov who jumped 16.62 metres.
The 25-year-old Singh was born in Amritsar and is currently coached by Romanian coach Bedros Bedrosian. He had started his career as a 100-metre sprinter but later switched to triple jump.
Further good news emerged from the track and field events after Swapna Barman clinched the gold medal in Women’s Heptathlon. This increased the gold medal tally to eleven.
Barman had humble beginnings. Her father was bed ridden ever since her childhood. He used to earlier work as a rickshaw puller. Their financial situation also meant that she could never afford proper nutrition required for a sports athlete.
Despite the struggles, she clinched gold at the 2017 Asian Athletic Championship. Now she is an Asian Games gold medallist.
Earlier in the evening Indian sprinter Dutee Chand bagged the silver medal in Women’s 200 metres race. She had earlier won the silver medal in the 100 metres event as well.
As things stand. India is at the eighth position in the medal tally with a tally of 54 medals. We have won 11 golds, 20 silvers and 23 bronze medals respectively.
