In a shocking case of corruption in Assam’s Dispur, two individuals employed by the government as part of efforts to prepare a National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state, were caught in an undercover operation accepting a Rs 10,000 bribe to unlawfully enter a woman’s name into the register, reports Deccan Chronicle.
The two persons were both employees at the NRC Sewa Kendra of the district, with Syed Shahjahan serving as a field level officer, and the other arrested official, Rahul Parasar, holding the position of assistant local registrar of citizen registration.
The two were busted by undercover officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Assam Police after the complainant, Kajari Ghosh Dutta, approached them about their unscrupulousness.
“All connected documents have also been seized by the ACB team from the office of the NRC Sewa Kendra. The accused had highlighted some technical defects in her application and demanded the bribe to correct the defects and enter her name thereafter into the final draft of the NRC,” said a police officer.
