Assam Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led alliance has crossed the majority mark of 64 as the counting for the 126 seats in the Assam Assembly election is ongoing, as per the Election Commission data.
The BJP has an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP).
According to the latest official EC trends, while the BJP is leading on 50 seats, its allies AGP and UPPL are ahead on 11 and six seats respectively, which means that the alliance has crossed the majority mark.
Meanwhile, Congress and its main ally Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are ahead on 19 and nine seats respectively.
The Sarbananda Sonowal-Himanta Biswa Sarma combine in Assam is seeking to retain power in Assam, with Himanta emerging as the tallest leader in the state, thereby positioning himself as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate. The BJP faces a tough fight from the combined forces of the Congress and Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF.
