Ayushman Bharat Benefits More Than 2 Lakh Citizens; Claims Totalling Rs 1,300 Crore Released By The States

More than 2 lakh beneficiaries have been treated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme in the 50 days since its launch, reports Business Standard. The scheme, billed as the world’s largest health insurance scheme, was launched by PM Modi on 23 September.
Also, 500,000 health cards have been distributed to various beneficiaries spread across the country. Out of the Rs. 1,700 crore-worth claims received under the scheme, state governments have already disbursed around Rs 1,300 crores. “Most claims are from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Chhattisgarh,” said a government official.
Ayushman Bharat, announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Union Budget this year, aims to provide a health insurance cover of up to Rs 5 lakh to 10 crore beneficiary families across the country. This is expected to benefit around 50 crore citizens. The families, most of whom are below the poverty line, are selected on the basis of the SECC (Socio-Economic Caste Census), 2011.
On 22 October, it was reported that Ayushman Bharat had already crossed the 1 lakh beneficiary mark. Though the pace of growth is increasing, some states have refused to come on board the scheme.
