Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan who shot into controversy after a remark on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Rama Devi may face consequences if he chooses not to apologise, as per the decision of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and leaders of opposition parties, reports ANI.

While Rama Devi was officiating the Lok Sabha, Khan said in the House, “Aap mujhe bahut achhi lagti hain. Itni achhi lagti hain ki man karta hai aapki aankho me aankhe dale rahu. (I like you a lot. I like you so much that I want to keep looking into your eyes). She said, “this is not the way to speak, please expunge these remarks,” to which Khan said, “You are very respected. You are like my sister.”

The comment generated an uproar in the House, and MPs demamded apology from Khan who had courted controversy in the past for making an inappropriate comment against Jaya Prada. The Rampur MP, however, said that he would not apologise, and that if anything he said was unparliamentary, he would resign.

Rama Devi said, “He has never respected women, we all know what he had said about Jaya Prada ji. He has no right to stay in Lok Sabha, I will request Speaker to dismiss him. Azam Khan must apologise.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today (26 July 2019) met opposition leaders Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Jayadev Galla, Danish Ali, Supriya Sule, and others over the incident. They came to the conclusion that SP MP Azam Khan should apologise in the House for his remarks on BJP MP Rama Devi. Speaker will take action if Azam Khan doesn't apologise.
