Battling Water Woes, Tamil Nadu Asks Centre For Rs 5,400 Crore To Fund Drinking Water Projects

In order to fight the severe water shortage across the state, the Tamil Nadu government has sought financial assistance of Rs 5,398 crore from the central government in order to implement water supply projects, especially in Chennai, reports The Hindu BusinessLine.
In this regard, Tamil Nadu's State Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, SP Velumani on Tuesday (11 June) met with the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
The projects pitched for financial assistance include a desalination plant, connected pipeline works with a capacity of 100 million litres per day (MLD) to Villupuram and Thindivanam and more.
Velumani also apprised Shekhawat through a memorandum that the state government had undertaken major projects for the Chennai Metropolitan area including two major desalination projects at an estimated cost of Rs 7,337.78 crore to supply 550 MLD of water. The two plants are expected to be completed by December 2022.
