A Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charanjeet Sharma in connection with the October 2015 Behbal Kalan police firing on anti-sacrilege protesters, in which two people were killed, reports Indian Express.

The Justice Ranjit Singh panel constituted to probe the events had recommended that the names of then Moga SSP Charanjeet Sharma and three other police officers be included in the Behbal Kalan incident First Information Report (FIR).

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had dismissed all petitions filed by the Punjab police officials (most of them retired) challenging the Justice Ranjith Singh Commission report and had directed the SIT to probe the matter.

The officials had reportedly challenged the procedure adopted by the state government in constituting the inquiry committee.

Apart from Sharma, SP Bikramjit Singh, Inspector Pardeep Singh and Sub-Inspector Amarjit Singh are the other officers included in the FIR.

The SIT had issued summons to Sharma asking him to appear before the SIT on 29 January, after the court dismissed the petitions on 25 January.
