A student of class I was thrashed by a schoolteacher in Howrah district of West Bengal over saying “Jai Shri Ram” in Sri Ramkrishna Sikshalaya on Wednesday, reports Republic. The school is reportedly financed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government.

According to the student, he and his classmates were talking in the classroom when he was asked to raise the slogan of 'Jai Shri Ram' by his fellow mates. A teacher passing by the classroom heard the slogan and beat up the child.

The father of the child also confirmed that his son had complained of being thrashed at school. However, he said that he will not file a police complaint as he was concerned about the safety and security of his child at the school.

As per sources, the accused teacher is missing following the incident. The family of the 7-year-old kid reported the incident to the principal of the school, but no FIR has been filed against the teacher in the matter. The father said that the child has been traumatised after the incident.

"The sir hit our child and asked him not to say 'Jai Shri Ram' whether in school or outside. He's almost 7 years old and I've never seen him this nervous. He's a courageous kid and I've always encouraged him. He does not want to go to school out of fear. We've scolded him so many times but have never seen such behaviour," the father of the victim said.
