The junior doctors in West Bengal called off their strike on Monday evening (17 June) after being assured of 10 point security measures by state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Economic Times has reported.

During her meeting with the doctors at the state secretariat, Mamata assured them of better security measures to prevent attacks by a patient’s relatives in the future.

The doctors are said to make a formal statement informing of their decision to withdraw at the NRS hospital in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day AIIMS doctors had appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene in the matter which they claimed was being dragged on just to protect the ego and prestige of Mamata.

On Saturday (15 June), Mamata had formally caved in to the doctors’ demands and appealed them to resume work. This was a far cry from her aggressive posture wherein she had demanded that the doctors call off the strike or face consequences.

The doctors had begun their strike from 11 June to protest against an attack on them by a 200 strong mob after a 75-year-old Mohammed Shaheed died during treatment.
