West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has sanctioned the prosecution of Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Madan Mitra and Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada sting tapes case as requested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI, on Saturday (8 May).

Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim are to be sworn in as ministers in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's cabinet.

Sovan Chatterjee, who quit the TMC to join the BJP, left BJP after the announcement of the candidate's list for the 2021 Elections.

A statement issued by the Raj Bhavan read."Honourable governor is the competent authority to accord sanction in terms of law as he happens to be the appointing authority for such ministers in terms of Article 164 of the Constitution," according to a report published in Hindustan Times

In 2016, Narada sting tapes were released ahead of assembly elections claimed to have been shot in 2014.

Among the leaders caught on camera were Subrata Mukherjee, Sovan Chatterjee, Madan Mitra and Firhad Hakim.

Mathew Samuel conducted the alleged sting operation for the Narada News portal.

The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the sting operation in March 2017.
