On the day one of the nationwide prioritised COVID-19 vaccination drive which is aimed at immunising the frontline workers, several leaders of the West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress (TMC) got vaccinated in the State's Purba Bardhaman district even as many healthcare workers could not receive the jabs despite having been called for it, reports Times of India.

TMC leaders who got themselves vaccinated include two sitting MLAs of the party Shubhash Mondal and Rabindranath Chatterjee and also former TMC MLA Banamali Hazra. Other TMC leaders who got themselves vaccinated on day one include Zilla Parishad Karmadakshya Jahar Bagdi and Bhatar Panchayat Samity Public Health in charge Mahendra Hazra.

This comes, even as during his interaction with the CMs, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi had specifically pressed that public representatives should not partake in this exercise which is targeted at vaccinating the frontline workers. He had stated, "We public representatives are not a part of it."

District's health officials reasoned that the TMC leaders who got vaccinated were all associated with different hospitals as members of their Patients' Welfare Committees and were therefore eligible for the first round of vaccination.
