In order to facilitate easy transport of organs and medical supplies to hospitals, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has been scanning through all possibilities to develop drone ports to make way for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or drones. A hybrid drone which can double up both as an aircraft as well as a chopper, along with Vertical Takeoff Landing (VTOL), has now been developed by Rohit Dey, a drone developer based in Bengaluru.
Bangalore Mirror quoted Dey as saying, “One of the hardest hurdles for any UAV design is the VTOL UAV. This is a totally new concept which I have designed with a low budget (approximately about Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000). Many government agencies are trying to work on it and have not yet achieved success despite a huge amount of funding. But I managed to crack the concept.”
Capable of carrying a payload of 5.5 kg, the drone has been named Humming Bird. He has been working on other prototypes with better payloads as well. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha, recently announced that he has put in place a task-force to draft a new policy on drones.
Drone Policy 2.0 is expected to address matters such as regulatory measures for autonomous flying, delivery of material etc.
