Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has sent requests to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) forest department to clear around 400 trees for construction of Silk Board-KR Puram metro line in Phase-2A, Deccan Herald has reported.
This line is expected to be the solution for traffic congestion in the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and surrounding regions.
Out of the 400 trees, 100 trees are to be translocated and 300 are to be felled. The trees may be translocated to some of the parks which are nearby. It is reported that BMRCL is in talks with companies located around the ORR to find spots where the trees can be shifted.
BBMP has to consult the public for cutting down more than 50 trees as per rules and the decision on this will be taken by the tree committee chairman.
It is stated that BMRCL has done a preliminary survey and a joint survey with BBMP is yet to be done.
In another development, BBMP has granted BMRCL permission to cut down 200 trees for the construction of R V Road-Bommasandra line in Phase-2. BMRCL had submitted eight separate applications to cut down 213 trees. Possibly, this has been done to bypass the rule which mandates for public consultation to cut down more than 50 trees.
Earlier, BBMP had granted permission for felling 68 trees within a year of application submission without holding any public consultation.
