It’s been reported that, alongside the two important suburban railway projects, quadrupling of Cantonment-Whitefield railway line will begin as soon as the tender documents being prepared by the South Western Railways (SWR) are out, Deccan Herald has reported.

SWR’s Chief Administration Officer K C Swami has hinted that the cost of the quadrupling the railway line is estimated to be Rs 493 crore and the doubling of the Yeshwantpura to Channasandra line will supposedly cost the SWR Rs 314 crore. The latter line is 21.7 km long. Along with this, the Baiyappanahalli-Hosur line will be doubled at a cost of Rs 376 crore.

Once these railway networks/lines are expanded, there will be more space to introduce suburban rails. In order to handle high traffic, the Cantonment to Whitefield line will have automatic signalling technology.

By June 2019, the SWR hopes that they will have three platforms at the coaching terminal that will ease operations on the route.

The suburban rail’s progress pretty much depends on the completion of three aforementioned projects. SWR hopes that work will be completed by 2021.

The government of Karnataka (GoK) has submitted a letter to the Indian Railways asking for a deposit of Rs 2.45 crore in order to initiate a joint venture (JV). The total cost of the suburban rail project is estimated at Rs 17,000 crore. GoK had requested the railways to hold 51 per cent shares, which the latter complied to.
