After about 22 years, two women corporators in Bengaluru have occupied the top positions of the city council Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). Indian National Congress’s Gangambike Mallikarjun has been elected as the 52nd Mayor of the city on Friday (September 28). Ramila Umashankar of JD(S) has been elected Deputy Mayor.

Since 1996, this had never repeated before until yesterday (September 28). This will be the eighth time a woman is being elected as the Mayor. Gangambike represents Jayanagar ward and Ramila is from Kaveripura, Deccan Herald reported.

259 voters are enlisted in total out of which 253 were present during elections. The number required to win is 130. Six corporators were marked absent. BJP saw some high drama going on as they were engaged in trying to get the support of eight independent candidates. The effort didn’t pay off.

Leader of Opposition in BBMP Padmanabha Reddy gave a letter to Kalsad against eight Congress leaders for holding multiple voter ID cards. Kalsad informed that this is a legal matter and action cannot be taken henceforth.

Gangambike secured 130 votes and Ramila received 129. It is said that Shantinagar MLA NA Harris left the voting process.
