In the light of the Mohammed Nalapad incident, the Bengaluru police has launched a #BhayamukthaBengaluru campaign to ensure that the common man does not fear for his safety in the city.

In the recent case of blatant misuse of power and influence, Mohammed Haris Nalapad, son of Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) NA Haris, was accused of brutally assaulting a person in the UB City mall in Bengaluru.

The visuals from the incident sent huge shockwaves in the city, following which Haris - who is also a Youth Congress leader, was arrested last Monday (22 February). Karnataka Chief Minister (CM) Siddaramaiah had also condemned the incident on Twitter.

However, the Karnataka CM has since been accused of trying to shield Haris by offering a compromise to the victim’s father, who has rejected the CM’s offer. BNS Reddy, Inspector General of Karnataka Police, has also said that the police officers investigating the crime were facing political pressure in another embarrassment for the ruling Congress government in the state.

Launching the campaign, the Inspector General said that the police will ensure that no more Nalapad like attacks are tolerated in the city. In a written statement, he wrote that Bengaluru has to fight back, and ensure that the rule of law is maintained. He has also implored the citizens to stand up to the ‘rein of terror unleashed by Mohammed Nalapad’ instead of being mute spectators.

He also wrote that the police will connect with people, invite suggestions and draw up an action plan to ensure that action is taken against such incidents in the city.
