Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani at a Jio event (digit.in)
In a major boost for the Make in India initiative of the Government of India, Mukesh Ambani led telco Reliance Jio has developed its own 4G and 5G end-to-end gear, becoming probably the first mobile phone company globally to develop in-house technology for replacing third-party equipment vendors, reports Economic Times.
The company which was using technologies developed by Nokia and Oracle for driving its 4G voice services has now replaced those with its own in-house developed technologies, reducing the dependency on foreign vendors.
Reliance Jio has already reached out to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for its permission to conduct 5G trials based on its own technology. The company had also recently presented to DoT an explanation of the technology developed by it and its possible use cases.
Having developed end-to-end 5G technology, Jio would be able to use it for security and surveillance using drones, industrial Internet of Things and digitisation in the agriculture sector.
The company's move towards conducting 5G trials on its own technology comes even as it had previously also applied for carrying out trials in partnerships with European vendors Nokia and Ericsson, China-based Huawei and South Korean giant Samsung.
