A number of measures have announced for the welfare and protection of the transgender community in Bihar by the state government, including providing them Rs 1.5 lakh each to undergo sex change surgery, reports The Hindu.

Moreover, any person who would deny renting a transgender a house or infringe upon any other right would face a jail term ranging from six months to two years. These measures were announced by Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi during the inauguration of Kinnar Mahotsva, an annual festival of the transgender community.

Bihar has also established a transgender welfare board to secure the interests of transgenders in the state.

Speaking about the same, Modi said, “The newly formed Bihar Rajya Kinnar Kalyan Board (Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board) will also look into facilities being provided to the members of this community in other States...so that they too could be given to them here in Bihar.”
