Bitter Divorce In Making? Bill Introduced In US Congress To Terminate Pakistan’s Major Non-NATO Ally Status

Republican Congressman, Andy Briggs, has introduced legislation in Congress to terminate the designation of Pakistan as a major non-NATO ally. The Resolution 73 presented in the House of Representatives seeks cessation of Pakistan as a major non-NATO ally and sets conditions for its re-designation if any.
For appropriate and necessary action, the resolution has been sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
It is stated that for future re-designation, the President of United States of America (USA) needs to certify to the Congress that Pakistan’s continued military which contributes significantly disrupt the safe haven and freedom of movement of the Haqqani Network in that country.
Furthermore, it is also stated that steps have to be taken by Pakistan to demonstrate its commitment in order to prevent the Haqqani Network from using any Pakistani territory as a safe haven and that the Government of Pakistan’s active coordination with Afghanistan’s Government to restrict the movement of militants like the Haqqani Network along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, reports Indian Express.
The resolution has also asked for certification from the US President that there has been a progress in arrests and prosecutions of Haqqani Network senior leaders and mid-level operatives from Pakistan.
