West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has summoned state Home Secretary and director general of Police (DGP) after a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district.

BJP leader Manish Shukla was killed by shooting him multiple times in the back and upper torso on Sunday (4 October) at Titagarh in North 24 Parganas, reports Hindustan Times.

After the attack by assailants who were on a motorcycle and had their faces covered with a mask, Shukla was rushed to a private hospital in Kolkata, where he was declared dead less than three hours after he had been shot.

It should be noted that Shukla was formerly a member of Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress (TMC). He quit the party two years ago and joined BJP. His murder has led to tensions in large parts of Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in which Titagarh is located.

Protesting over the development, BJP workers have also set up a blockade on BT Road, demanding the arrest of the culprits. The party workers have announced a 12-hour bandh on the entire stretch between Titagarh and Kanchrapara regions. Meanwhile, Barrackpore's police commissioner Manoj Verma has deployed rapid action force on the streets in view of the tension.

Taking note of the development and expressing worry over the state's law and order situation, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has summoned the State's Secretary of Home Affairs and Director General of Police (DGP) to the Raj Bhawan today (5 October) at 10am.
