Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah will contest Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat, reported Republic TV today (26 July), along with Information and Broadcasting and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.
Shah is expected to file the nomination for the 8 August Rajya Sabha polls by 28 July.
Shah has been the party president since 2014, after Narendra Modi and the BJP rose to power at the centre. For a year before that, he was the party general secretary; his work was significant in helping the BJP win so comprehensively in the 2014 general elections.
He also held several portfolios when Modi was chief minister of Gujarat.
