At the end of the second, and, in some constituencies, the third round of counting in Assam, the BJP is leading in 11 of the 14 seats in Assam, with the Congress leading in just two and the AIUDF in just one. If the trends hold, the results will come as a complete and huge surprise to all in Assam.

Pollsters had predicted that the BJP would win about seven seats in Assam, while the Congress would win six seats and the AIUDF one. But it now seems that the BJP may improve its 2014 tally of seven seats and BJP strongman and state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s confident prediction of winning at least ten seats may come true.

The early trends clearly prove that fears of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which drew widespread protests in Assam, severely harming the BJP’s electoral prospects have turned out to be totally unfounded. Incidentally, Sarma and other BJP leaders have been consistently saying that the Bill, which the BJP has promised to re-introduce in the next Lok Sabha, will have no effect on the polls.
