Mobile air traffic control tower (Facebook)
Jharkhand's Bokaro steel city has become the first airport to get a mobile air traffic control (ATC) tower at its airport under the regional connectivity scheme popularly known as UDAN.
As per Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman - Guruprasad Mohapatra, AAI has obtained eight trailer-mounted towers at the expense of Rs 64.6 crore from a Slovak organisation. These are being utilised at little airports for regional connectivity scheme (RCS) flights.
Previously, AAI has utilised mobile ATC towers however now they are doing it in a systematic way given the demand for RCS flights, reports Financial Express.
The air-traffic mobile towers have been acquired from MSM Martin Company Slovakia, Slovak Republic. The initial eight which have been obtained will be utilised in Bilaspur, Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, Jeypore, Utkela, Vellore, Bokaro and Mithapur (Gujarat).
An AAI official was cited in the report saying that mobile ATC towers have been created by following ATC prerequisites. These mobile towers are said to be of splendid quality and permit operations in any airport in India.
Earlier AAI was looking at remote air traffic control towers which means a centralised tower controls all the air operations with the help of video surveillance.
