INS Kalvari of the Indian Navy (Pic Via Indian Navy)
In a bid to boost the firepower of the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a tender worth more than Rs 2,000 crore for procuring around 100 heavyweight torpedoes for the naval force’s six Scorpene-class submarines being built at the Mumbai-based Mazagaon dockyards, reports Economic Times.
"The tender for acquiring around 100 heavyweight torpedoes for the submarines for the Indian Navy was issued 10 days ago by the Defence Ministry," sources in the MoD were quoted in the report as saying.
The French-origin Scorpene submarines are being built in India at the Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and have now been named the Kalvari class. The first such submarine INS Kalvari has already been inducted into the Navy and is carrying out operational duties.
According to the report, Navy’s immediate requirement for heavyweight torpedoes would be fulfilled by the acquisition to be made through the foreign vendors. However, the long-term bulk requirement would be met through the ‘Make in India’ route.
The tenders for the heavyweight torpedoes for Navy have been issued to global manufacturers from France, Sweden, Russia and Germany.
