Brazil’s Health Ministry has signed an agreement with Indian pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech to procure 20 million doses of Covaxin vaccine, reports Money Control.

The development comes on the day as the fatalities due to Covid-19 deaths reached 2, 50,000 in the South American country.

President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration announced that the initial eight million shots of Covaxin, which will be made by Brazilian company Precisa Medicamentos, will arrive in the country in early March.

Subsequently, the next batch of eight million doses will be delivered in April and the final four million shots will reach the country in May.

It should be noted that Bharat Biotech had signed an agreement with Precisa Medicamentos in January for the supplies of COVAXIN to Brazil.

Meanwhile, Brazil has vaccinated only four per cent of its 210 million population so far.

Last week, some Brazilian cities had to halt their immunization campaigns due to shortage of vaccine shots. Until now, neither Bharat Biotech nor Precisa Medicamentos have confirmed these orders nor have they officially stated any delivery dates.
