Citing the prevailing conditions in the country caused by the devastating second wave of Covid-19, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has postponed the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2021 to 10th October from the earlier date of 27 June.
“Due to the prevailing conditions caused by the novel CoronaVirus (COVID-19), the Union Public Service Commission has deferred the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2021, which was scheduled to be held on 27th June, 2021. Now, this Examination will be held on 10th October, 2021,” UPSC said in a statement.
The number of positions advertised by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) this year has gone down from 796 last year to 712. In 2019, the UPSC had advertised for 896 posts while it was 782 positions in 2018, despite a shortage of civil servants in the country.
In 2019, Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, had said that 5,205 IAS positions were filled as against the total authorised strength of 6,699. Reportedly, big states like Maharashtra have sanctioned 415 positions, nearly 100 posts are still lying vacant.
