The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) probe into the allegations of sexual misconduct against Brett Kavanaugh have stalled his elevation to the Supreme Court of the United States, The Washington Post reported.
President Donald Trump has ordered the FBI to conduct an additional background investigation into the allegations of sexual assault that has delayed his nominee's elevation to the country’s highest court.
The US Judiciary Committee had requested the White House to institute a FBI probe into “current credible allegations” of sexual assault against Kavanaugh.
After a categorical statement in support of Kavanaugh, Republican senator Jeff Flake recalibrated his position and requested for a one-week delay in the confirmation process to facilitate an investigation.
Kavanaugh, who is Trump’s choice, defended himself against accusations that he forced himself on California psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford at a party when both were in high school. It has been alleged that Kavanaugh, who was 17 then, tried to pin down a 15-year-old Ford to a bed, covered her mouth, and tried to remove her clothing before she was able to escape. In a nationally televised proceeding last Thursday, Ford testified before the US Congress.
The FBI investigation will also cover another allegation of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh, made by Deborah Ramirez. Ramirez has accused Kavanaugh of exposing himself to her at a party when they were students at Yale University.
The White House has said that the "claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats designed to tear down a good man."
