Indian Railways is set to take a giant leap for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has collaborated with SwissRapid AG to introduce magnetic levitation (Maglev) trains to India.

Two top officials of both the corporations, S V Srinivasan and Niklaus H Koeing, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate this initiative. The agreement will enable BHEL to manufacture these futuristic trains in India.

Maglev trains conveniently operate at a speed of 500 km/h and levitate in air thus avoiding any contact with the tracks. The accord between two companies promotes greater cooperation between the two dispensations.

They will be looking to survey the opportunities to do business in India, and thus share skills, assets along with knowledge to overview the scope of the project of Maglev trains in the country. These trains are credited to conserve energy and lessen the total cost of system ownership as well.

Whilst the commencement of this partnership is laudable, it is necessary to ensure they come at a consensus for the project to actually materialize in India considering that Maglev can potentially transform the status of Indian Railways in the coming times.
